How prepaid calling cards work

prepaid phone cardsThe mechanism of prepaid calling card is quite simple. Being a prepaid calling plan, the caller will pay the face value of the card and buy the plan. Whenever calls are made, the balance in the card gets reduced. The caller has the option to buy additional calling time whenever he chooses. Normally, the balance in the plan should be used with a specific period of time. If it is not used, the amount gets lapsed. But, the caller can buy a new plan from the same company and transfer the balance in the old card to the new one. So, the caller does not lose any amount.

Each card bought will come with a unique number called the PIN (personal identification number) and this number identifies the caller. Whenever calls are to be made, the caller has to dial the PIN number followed by country code, area code and the desired telephone number. The caller has the option to register these numbers with the calling company’s helpline. So, whenever calls are to be made to any of the registered number, it is sufficient if he dials his PIN number. He will be connected to the toll free calling zone. The helpline will navigate him to the list of registered telephone numbers. All that the caller has to do is to select the required number and he is connected.

This facility is called the speed dialing. The main feature of this system is it is possible to get connected quickly. Of course in this procedure, the card is assigned a number called the ‘access number’.
